Temples in Chikmagalur

Kalasa

Kalasa, a holy temple-town and taluk, is in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka. The term Kalasa is derived from Sanskrit words, Kalasha, which refers to a waterpot or jug. The beginning of Kalasa is hidden in the myths of the ancients. The Kalaseshwara Temple, which is the abode of the deity Shiva, occupies the place of Kalasa.

The altitude at which Kalasa stands is 807 m over sea level. Numerous myths are associated with this place. The most popular one tells of the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. According to the myth, the wedding of Lord Shiva and Parvati in the Himalayas was so grand that the mere presence of all Gods and Goddesses caused a little discomfort and even a shift in the Earth’s rotation.

Hornadu

Hornadu is a village in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, which comes under Mudigere taluk. The village of Horanadu is perched 831 m above the sea level. Its fame can be majorly credited to the temple of Goddess Annapoorneshwari. The term, Annapoorna combines two very Sanskrit words; “Anna” means grains or food and “Poorna” means perfect and complete. Thus, the word Annapoorna carries the meaning of food being complete or perfect.

Hornadu is synonymous with Adhishakthyathmaka Sri Annapoorneshwari Temple. The temple’s name, Annapoorna, literally means “Feeding one and all” and thus it is the case that any visitor to this temple is given meals and provided with shelter within the temple compound. The temple is also referred to as Sri Kshetra Horanadu Temple. The temple complex is enveloped by the thick forests and ravines of the Western Ghats and is situated at the banks of the beautiful Bhadra River.
